Home for Heroes (Disabled Family Home) Frome, Somerset
11.04 developed this site jointly with an existing client, choosing to design a family house for a disabled person, possibly a member of the armed forces returning injured from service in the middle east.
Few homes have been designed for disabled families, and therefore it was considered this project would act as valuable research, as well as catering to a niche market. It was felt the socially responsible proposal would be unlikely to receive objections from the local community or local planning authority. Sadly, however the design proved controversial, with the windows designed to give someone confined to a wheelchair an outlook onto the garden and outside world, deemed unacceptable by the Planning Authority. This resulted in a complaint to the Government’s Planning Minister and a subsequent approval, albeit for a more conventional home. The site was subsequently sold at auction with a 1500% increase in value.
